Do you have need to drill through some metal, such as steel?  You know that your regular drill bits simply won’t cut it. But what’s the best way to go? If you need to cut through metal, you should consider getting some titanium drill bits or cobalt drill bits.

Let’s take a look at each drill bit and how it can be used most effectively:
Cobalt drill bits are made from cobalt steel blended with a fairly large percentage of cobalt. The cobalt actually makes the drill bit incredibly hard, with an abrasion quality. Cobalt bits are also superior for their resistance to heat.
Cobalt bits are used for production drilling (repeated drilling or professional projects). Cobalt drill bits are specifically designed for drill into hard, abrasive materials. They are ideal when used to drill into stainless steel, titanium and even cast iron.
If you are going to repeatedly drill through steel and other metals, you may want to look at cobalt drill bits, which are cobalt all the way through, can be sharpen when needed.
On the other hand, titanium drill bits are a metal formulation of titanium nitride applied to (coating) a High Speed Steel (HSS) drill bits. These titanium drill bits have incredible high surface hardness and are very corrosive resistant.
Titanium drill bits also significantly reduce the friction between the drill bit and the material being drilled through. Titanium bits are also ideal for cutting through metal. They will last up to six times longer than standard HSS drill bits.
Titanium drill bits have a higher hardness level typically than cobalt drill bits. However, the titanium is a coating on the drill bit, so you won’t be able to sharpen the drill bit and keep the titanium coating.
Both titanium bits and cobalt bits are more expensive than traditional HSS drill bits. But these drill bits are used for a very special purpose. Cutting through or drilling holes into stainless steel is not something most people need to do with their household drill. So, in part, using titanium or cobalt bits depends on what type of task and how often you plan to use the drill bits.

M42, Cobalt Drill Bits, For Hard Steels and Stainless

We recently just finished testing our M42 cobalt gold drill bits up against eight other brand cobalt drill manufacturers and found we have by far the best value when it comes to cobalt drill bits. First we found some of the companies out there say there bit is cobalt when in fact it is just a coated high speed steel. Beware of the words cobalt coated.   Cobalt (pronounced KOH-BOLT) is a hard, lustrous, gray metal, a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. The metallic cobalt was not discovered until 1735. Pure cobalt is not found in nature but small ammounts of it are found in rocks, soil, plants and animals. Basically found in the form of ores. Cobalt is usually not mined alone, and tends to be produced as a by-product of nickel and copper mining activities. Our M42 T-Plus 10% Boss Hog cobalt gold series is simply the best way to go when it comes to drilling hard materials. http://www.drillbitwarehouse.com/

How to choose the right drill bit

Choosing the right drill bit can sometimes be a little difficult. Drilling hard steel or metal you would sometimes be better off with a cobalt drill bit rather then a high speed steel drill bit. Remember the harder the drill bit, the more brittle the drill bit.
High speed steel drill bits are generally the most common for most uses. If you are dealing with a hard wood, sometimes it is wise to use titanium drill bits, because it dissipates the heat better. Keeping the drill bit and the wood cooler during the drilling process. When Hard steel and stainless is an issue, it is usually better to use a cobalt drill bit. And finally depending on the drill motor and the feed and speed rate, a carbide drill bit might do the trick. And within all categories you need to also consider the type of flute or drill point that is needed. Whatever the need we here at Drill bit warehouse have the right product for the job. Drill Bits for Steel and Aluminum

What drill bit to use? Well the type of flute determines how the chip will flow. At drill bit warehouse they carry both 118 degree fluted and 135 degree fluted drill bits.

118 degree is usually used in non ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass etc. The 135 degree fluted bits are used for your harder stainless materials and exotic metals.

At Drillbitwarehouse.com I found a great selection as well as fantastic prices on both types. The beauty of drill bit warehouse, is that if you can't find it quickly, you can simply call the 1-800-350-8665 number and knowledgeable people are quick to answer my questions. So if you are in need of a drill bit for steel, hard metals, aluminum, brass, carbon fiber or wood, concrete, asphalt or even glass. From a long drill bit in colalt to a stubby in carbide or even high speed steel. Check out drill bit Warehouse.com

Drilling out Broken Bolts and Screws

DRILLING OUT BROKEN BOLTS

I have found that when drilling out broken bolts, screws and easy-outs, DrillBitWarehouse.com has a great set of left handed drill bits. A left handed drill bit has a reverse flute so all you do is put it in a hand drill in reverse and it just makes drilling out bolts so much easier. Sometimes I use a solid carbide rotory burr, if the broken bolt is made out of super hard steel. With a micro-grain burr it actually grinds through it and drills it out. I bought a Set of four extra long carbide burrs and they really come in handy when a long reach is needed.
